Devotional

What is so amazing about grace? This song answers that question in two ways: by proclaiming who the Giver of grace is and by defining grace itself.

We start with verses 1 – 4, which ask questions that help us think about the magnitude of the One who gives us grace.

He is the One who:

  • Breaks the power of sin and darkness (Col. 1:13–14)

  • Loves with might and strength (Ps. 59:16)

  • Shakes the whole earth with holy thunder (Job 9:6)

  • Leaves us breathless in awe and wonder (Hab. 1:5; Luke 5:26)

  • Brings chaos back into order (Gen. 1:31)

  • Makes the orphans sons and daughters (Eph. 1:4–7)

  • Rules the nations with truth and justice (Deut. 10:17; John 1:16–17)

  • Shines like the sun in all its brilliance (Matt. 17:2)

Immediately after asking, “Who is the One who does all these things?”, the songwriter wants us to proclaim the answer: God — the King of Glory, the King above all kings. By singing that God is the answer to all of these questions, we honor Him and acknowledge His place above all things (Read Psalm 24).

In the chorus, we sing about grace — how Jesus took on our penalty of death, bore our cross, and laid His life down for us so that we may be set free from sin and death. It is finished! Now we can sing about this amazing grace — this amazing act through which the God of the universe, in His loving kindness, made us alive again. (Eph. 2:4–10)

Therefore, we praise Jesus, the Lamb who was slain — the One who redeemed us through His blood (Rev. 5:9–13). He is worthy of praise!
